The roots of the word Basmati comes from Sanskrit namely "vas" (aroma) and "mayup" (ingrained).
While combining "mayup" changes it "mati" making it "vasmati".
The word basmati derives from Hindi बासमती bāsmatī, literally meaning "fragrant".
